Q&A with author J.M. Irving
WTB: Does writing energize or exhaust you?
J.M. Irving: I like to believe that writing energizes me. Sometimes I may be tired when I write, but nothing is better than getting in a steady flow and developing story with passion due to that flow.
WTB: If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
J.M. Irving: If I could tell me younger writing self something it would be, "STOP TRYING TO BE PERFECT!!! The book you're writing is supposed to be written in the way YOU WANT IT TO, not how so-and-so wrote it. DO YOU!"
WTB: How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?
J.M. Irving: "Britain's Bay" is not my first book, however, it is my first Fiction book. So going off of that experience would be to take my time and not say, "Hey, it's done!" Unless it actually is done. As author's we also get really excited to release our material that you all are waiting so desperately for. :-)
WTB: What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?
J.M. Irving: My favorite underappreciated novel(s) (I feel) are the"Twilight" books by Stephenie Meyer! I know! I know! But this series is what got me to love reading as well as writing! I can honestly thank God and Stephenie Meyer for those books because they are truly awesome! Without those I probably wouldn't be an author!
WTB: Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
J.M. Irving: Oh man, I love this question! Yes, yes, and yes! I am an Easter egg fanatic! i love hiding little things here and there throughout my novels hoping that the reader will pick them up along the way! I can say that I have taken some inspiration from Marvel Studios. And yes, there are plenty of Easter eggs within, "Britain's Bay" will you catch them? :-)
WTB: What was your hardest scene to write?
J.M. Irving: My hardest scene to write would have to be towards the ending of, "Britain's Bay". As the story comes to a close you realize that there are a few loose ends to tie up, resulting in a devastating and thrilling backfire of an ending. (Can you tell I'm trying so hard NOT to spoil it for you?!)
